Single On-campus Housing Applications

On-campus housing options are limited. It is important for students to be informed of the proper processes used to secure on-campus housing and of the appropriate deadlines. Students that do not engage in the correct process by the appropriate deadlines will have a lower likelihood of being able to secure on-campus housing.

Student Types and How to Apply
Student Type
Newly Admitted Students
Work Study Students: iWork, PAS, Hukilau, Robert Gay, AEMP
Previously admitted, Returning, or Off-campus Students

Housing availability and processes will be determined by your admission and student type. Select your student type on the tabs above to determine your specific process. We understand that this process is complex. If you need any help determining which process you should engage in, please contact Residential Life at housing@byuh.edu, or call (808) 675-3534.

Newly admitted students interested in living in single on-campus housing will need to follow a booking process based on their admittance.

The information below is for non-work study students only, referred to as self-funded students. Work Study students (iWork, PAS, Hukilau, Robert Gay) should refer to the 'Work Study Students' tab above.

New Freshman or First-Year Students

Single students who are admitted as new freshman or first-year students may complete a housing application with the reserve a room process to secure housing. Refer to the 'Reserve a Room' tab below.

Housing availability is limited. Once freshmen and first-year student housing has been filled or the process is closed, students may apply to the single on-campus housing waitlist

Single students who are admitted as new freshman or first-year students are required to live on-campus and should make every effort to secure housing on-campus by applying to reserve a room as soon as possible and checking their BYUH email regularly.

Housing freshmen or first year status is determined by the Single Student Freshman and Transfer Housing Policy.

How do I know if I am a new freshman?

New freshmen students are students that have recently graduated from high school (or the equivalent) and have not attended university or college before.

How do I know if I am a first-year student?

Newly admitted students that have completed credits before graduating from high school (or the equivalent) are considered first-year students.

Transfer, Returning, or Previously Admitted Students

Transfer or returning students admitted are not required to live on-campus but may apply to the single on-campus housing waitlist. Students that have completed credits before graduating from high school and Pathways (or the equivalent) are considered first-year students, not transfer students.

Work study students, formerly known as sponsored students, are students who are a part of the IWORK program, Hukilau Scholarship, Pacific Area Scholar and any other university-sponsored financial aid program.

Newly Admitted

Newly admitted single work study students will receive an email to secure housing once they have access to reserve a room. Those who receive an email must complete the reserve a room process before the deadline.

Single students who are admitted as work study students are required to live on-campus and should make every effort to secure housing on-campus, by checking their email regularly and reserving a room as soon as possible.

If you have not received an email to reserve a room, please apply to the single on-campus housing waitlist  as soon as possible.

Returning From LOA, Internship, or Break

Returning work study students who are single must apply to the single on-campus housing waitlist.

All other students interested in living in single on-campus housing must apply to the single on-campus housing waitlist.

Work Study Students

Work study students, formerly known as sponsored students, are students who are a part of the IWORK program, Hukilau Scholarship, Pacific Area Scholar, and any other university-sponsored financial aid program. If you are a work study student (iWork, PAS, Hukilau, Robert Gay, AEMP), please refer to the 'Work Study Students' tab above.

Reserve a Room

Single students who are admitted as new freshmen or first-year students may complete a housing application with the reserve a room  process to secure housing. Refer to the open dates above.

Newly admitted work-study students will receive an email to secure housing once they have access to reserve a room. Those who receive an email must complete the reserve a room process before the deadlines above.

Housing availability is limited. Once first-year student housing has been filled, students may apply to the single on-campus housing waitlist. Please refer to the 'JOIN THE WAITLIST' tab for directions on how to apply if first-year housing is filled.

How to Reserve a Room

  1. Log on to the Housing Portal.
  2. Select 'Secure Housing.'
  3. Select 'Hales.'
  4. Select 'Reserve a Room' and complete the process.

Once you have successfully reserved a room, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not have access to the reserve a room process on the portal, you are not eligible to reserve a room.

THERE ARE 5 PARTS TO THE 'RESERVE A ROOM' PROCESS

  • Update personal profile.
  • Select meal plan preference.
  • Complete a roommate matching survey.
  • Sign a hale contract.
  • Pay $50 non-refundable application fee, charged to your student account within seven business days.

Application Fee

All interested students must pay a non-refundable $50 hale application fee to apply for single-student on-campus housing.

The application fee will be charged to your student account, within seven business days after you have signed a contract. Once posted to your account, you may make a payment online.

To make a payment, please follow the instructions on the How to Make a Payment Online page. Unpaid fees will result in a hold on your account that could prevent registration for classes.

Housing Assignments

After the reserve a room deadline, applicants will have access to select a room. If they do not select a room on their own, they will be assigned based on their roommate matching preferences.

Freshmen and first-year students typically are assigned to first-year dorm residence halls without kitchens and are therefore required to have a meal plan. There are no requests for specific buildings or rooms.

Updating Your Application

You can update your application any time before the reserve a room deadline.

  1. Log on to the Housing Portal.
  2. Select 'Secure Housing.'
  3. Select 'Hales.'
  4. Select 'Update Application' and complete the process.

Waitlist

Once all first-year student housing has been filled, students may apply to the single on-campus housing waitlist. Please refer to the 'JOIN THE WAITLIST' tab for directions on how to apply if first-year student housing is filled.

Housing is not guaranteed, and students must make every effort to secure housing in a timely manner. If you are unable to secure on-campus housing due to a late application, you may need to appeal to live in off-campus housing and secure off-campus housing on your own. This option is only available when all on-campus housing is filled. If your appeal is not approved, you will be reported for violation of the ‘Single Student Freshman and Transfer Housing Policy’.

Single On-campus Housing Waitlist

Single student housing options are limited. Students wanting to secure on-campus housing can apply for the single on-campus housing waitlist on the Housing Portal. Refer to the open dates above.

How to Apply to Waitlist

  1. Sign on to the Housing Portal.
  2. Go to "Secure Housing."
  3. Select "Hales."
  4. Click "Apply to Waitlist."
  5. Complete the application. Do not forget to click finish!

If completed correctly, you will receive a confirmation email.

Room-type Eligibility

If you are offered a spot in on-campus housing, your offered room type will be first based on your eligibility, then on availability. Because housing is so limited, your ideal room and room type may not be available.

Apartment-style: upperclassmen.
Dorm-style: freshmen/first-year.

Sorting Groups

Students who apply to the waitlist will be sorted into the following 'sorting groups’:

Group 1: Work study students. This includes all students newly accepted into a work study program or current work study students.

Group 2: Newly admitted self-funded first-year students. This includes students required to live on campus under the ‘Single Student Freshman and Transfer Housing Policy.’ Students in this group will be assigned to freshman housing. This excludes students who have a current hale contract.

Group 3: All other students. This includes students living on or off-campus, students admitted prior, and students who took a leave of absence or deferred.

Credit Requirement

To be eligible for a room invitation, you must be registered as a full-time student (with at least one face-to-face credit) for the application semester. Waitlisted classes do not count toward the credit total.

You do not have to register at the time of application to the waitlist, but you must be registered by the time of the invitation. We understand you cannot register for classes until your open date, but we want you to be prepared to register as soon as possible.

  • Make sure you have no holds on your account that would prevent you from registering.
  • Plan your semester out with your MAP or an academic advisor

New international students required to take an EIL test before registering will be registered in a placeholder class that will qualify as full-time credits.

Remember!

  • Waitlisted classes do not count toward the credit total.
  • If you are below full-time credits because you are graduating, request a Reduced Course Load Form through HANDSHAKE experiences. For more information, visit the Reduced Course Load Request webpage.

Invitation Process

The waitlist will be sorted by the following criteria:

  1. Credit requirement (yes or no).
  2. Sorting group.
  3. Date of application.

If you meet the criteria and there is availability in a room you are eligible for, you will be sent an invitation via your BYUH email. Please make sure your BYUH email is working BEFORE the invitation period. For email issues, please fill out an IT service request.

Invitations are sent out weekly. Once students receive an email, they will have access to accept the offer online on the Housing Portal for 48 hours. This access to accept is not available to a student until they have received an email invitation.

We will continue to send invitations each week if there are any availabilities.

Remember!

  • Invitations are sent to your BYUH email address.
  • You will only have 48 hours to respond, so check your emails regularly!

If you miss the deadline to accept your invitation but are still interested in housing, you will need to re-apply. You will have a new date.

Application Fee

All interested students must pay a non-refundable $50 hale application fee to apply for single-student on-campus housing.

The application fee will be charged to your student account within seven business days once you have signed a contract. Once posted to your account, you may make a payment online.

To make a payment, please follow the instructions on the How to Make a Payment Online page. Unpaid fees will result in a hold on your account that could prevent registration for classes.

Off-campus Housing

Students looking for off-campus housing must find and secure contracts on their own.
